Mixed media: crayon, coloured pencil, graphite and pastel on white paper, April 2013.
A sketch of a solitary copse of trees in a field in the Chiltern Hills made in early April, while the weather was still dull and wintry. I will post some more small sketches in the next week. A big thank you to all who follow me and thanks to all who give me insights into their own work and such pleasure and inspiration through what they share in return. Nicholas.
Fantastic as usual – you get a great sense of the dreary weather!

You are so kind, thank you! The weather was dreary too!! Its better today. I often use monotones to close the contrast gap and flatten the picture plane anyway, but overcast weather is quite useful!!

Love the texture in this one, Nicholas! There are a few lines in the tree area that really capture the tree form.

Lovely piece – our side of the Atlantic is just as gray right now. You’ve inspired me to try some pastels of my little pond. I’ve enjoyed your posts.

Although i think you limit yourself to paint, there is something of Anselm Keifer (spelt right?) in your textured almost monochrome surfaces.

If only I were that good! Thanks for the kind comment, I do limit my palette deliberately towards the monochrome and often look to ‘flatten’ the picture plane by a close tonality. This is a result of my previous work as an abstract painter in the Nineties. Today I use the landscape to inform my pieces. Best wishes, Nicholas.

I had a look at Anselm Kiefer’s painting again (not seen it for years) and you are right, we have a little bit in common as mark makers and I found his work very inspirational, so thank you for the tip! His sculptures are amazing too. It has given me some ideas. Best Nicholas.

I like the way you use high key colors and tones. Landscapes are my favorite subject matter.

Nicely done. It feels perfectly cold; almost as though spring is hiding.

Thank you! Spring is still hiding. Today is warm for the first time this year, but the trees are still to leaf, which is unheard of in normal years!
