Landscape Sketch in the Chiltern Hills Early April 2013

Landscape Sketch April 2013 - 1

Mixed media: crayon, coloured pencil, graphite and pastel on white paper, April 2013.

A sketch of a solitary copse of trees in a field in the Chiltern Hills made in early April, while the weather was still dull and wintry. I will post some more small sketches in the next week. A big thank you to all who follow me and thanks to all who give me insights into their own work and such pleasure and inspiration through what they share in return. Nicholas.

    1. You are so kind, thank you! The weather was dreary too!! Its better today. I often use monotones to close the contrast gap and flatten the picture plane anyway, but overcast weather is quite useful!!

    1. If only I were that good! Thanks for the kind comment, I do limit my palette deliberately towards the monochrome and often look to ‘flatten’ the picture plane by a close tonality. This is a result of my previous work as an abstract painter in the Nineties. Today I use the landscape to inform my pieces. Best wishes, Nicholas.

    2. I had a look at Anselm Kiefer’s painting again (not seen it for years) and you are right, we have a little bit in common as mark makers and I found his work very inspirational, so thank you for the tip! His sculptures are amazing too. It has given me some ideas. Best Nicholas.
